SERVICES
Open Hands Legal Services serves homeless and low-income New Yorkers through the provision of free legal services. Open Hands uses attorney volunteers to conduct intake at existing community-based organizations, such as soup kitchens, and to provide advice and representation on a variety of legal matters, focusing primarily on public benefits and housing law matters.
Open Hands Legal Services currently operates on the second Saturday of each month at The Father’s Heart Ministries, located in Manhattan’s lower east side and the first Tuesday of each month at New Life Community Development Center located in Elmhurst, Queens. The All Angels’ Church – Our Place Cafe and The Bowery Mission legal aid desk operate on a quarterly basis. Open Hands volunteers provide legal advice to clients, and in eligible cases, representation on legal issues relating to public benefits, subsidized housing and tenants’ rights.
