Open Hands Legal Services Seeks Temporary Part-Time Volunteer Attorneys

Open Hands Legal Services seeks a temporary part-time volunteer attorney for a 4 month position to support the provision of free legal services in a collaborative Christian social services setting at the Bowery Mission East Harlem Men’s Shelter. A number of Christian and East Harlem-based social service providers, are collaborating to provide a diverse range of services to members of the East Harlem community.

Open Hands Legal Services is a faith-based legal services organization.  We provide free legal services and spiritual support to the poor and indigent in New York City.   We do our work primarily through the use of volunteer attorneys.  We are lean, aggressive in our desire to effect justice and change lives and are passionate about providing hope and stability to individuals and communities.  More information is available at www.openhandslegalservices.org

The volunteer attorney will work with our partners at the Bowery Mission East Harlem Men’s Shelter to provide Christ-centered, holistic social services to individual members of the East Harlem community.  The volunteer attorney will work Monday through Wednesday.  He or she will conduct regular client intake and provide clients with legal advice in areas relating to landlord-tenant law, consumer law, family law, and re-entry, among other things.  The attorney’s duties will include conducting research, providing advice, referrals and, where appropriate, direct representation.  The position will commence on or around February 3, 2014.
